Air Ozone Purifiers: Are They Good or Bad?

Ozone is like the sun. Without ozone you would die. Yet too much can affect your health. So when air purifier companies try to sell you that ozone air purifiers are death machines or healthy air miracles the truth is somewhere in the middle.

How The Controversy Started

A year ago Consumer Reports claimed the Sharper Images Ionic Breeze air purifier emitted 150 to 300 parts per billion of ozone in samples taken 2 inches from the machine. This report led to the highly successful Ionic Breeze infomercials being pulled from TV. The Breeze image ionic Sharper Brand died, replaced by the Oreck air purifiers with overpriced infomercial units.

( Sharper Images Breeze Ionic Midi, breeze ionic plus professional, and breeze ionic quadra review models no longer have an Ozone problem. )

Lets look at both the good and the bad about Ozone in Air Purifiers:

Ozone is Good

You would die if there was no ozone.
Ozone is simply oxygen with an added molecule.
It is natures own air cleaner.
Ozone is produced by nature and cleans the air.
At low levels, as found in nature, it does a superb job of cleaning the air.
Some purifiers allow for on/off Ozone, allowing you to treat the room
All electric motors, and computers, produce Ozone

and Ozone is Bad

The EPA standard for ozone exposure is 80 parts per billion over 8 hours.
Ozone levels over 100 parts per billion can causes injury to the airways
High Ozone warnings signal that the air is bad.
High levels can irritate lung tissue
Even air purifiers that claim no ozone produce ozone if they have a fan.

Conclusion: When used properly ozone is very helpful at treating odor, mildew and mold. In 1985, even though I was an asthmatic, I used an ozone purifier. It helped my sleep by treating a mold and mildew problem in my bedroom.

For Asthmatics: Many people with asthma or lung problems consider avoiding ozone. If you like ozone for ocassional rom treatment (as I do) find a unit with low levels, timed, and dont sleep too close to it. You may also want to treat the room and leave the room empty for 3-6 hours. The ozone will fade in that time.

So Do You Want It In Your Purifier?

My advice is to find a unit that offers optional, timed ozone when you need or want it.

I now own an air purifier with optional on/off ozone that has a 2 hour ozone timer. I use it maybe 1 or 2 days a week when any room in my house gets musty smelling, and in the bathroom when it smells moldy, or mildewy . It freshens the room better than anything.

I hope I have cleared the air on the great ozone conspiracy.

Competing for Kid's Minds

Educators compete for kid's minds every day. What does it mean to compete for kid's minds? Well, kids have many things they can think about throughout the day. Students constantly make choices about the thoughts they prioritize. Just like the old days when we were in school, students can spend the day thinking about basketball practice, cheerleading practice, paper football, the big game this Friday, the new skateboard that just came out, or perhaps even academics.

As mentioned above, there are similarities between the choices we made during the old days and the choices kids make today. However, times have definitely changed. Students have many more things competing for their minds each day. Many of the new things educators compete with in order to capture the minds of children are directly related to today's technologies.

Kids embrace technology products. they use them. they think about them. they love them. Sometimes, they even obsess over them. If you have ever seen a student walking around with a cell phone, an mp3 music player, a backup mp3 music player, a set of bluetooth wireless headphones, a couple usb flash drives, a laptop computer, and a portable handheld game system then you know what I mean. Some kids these days look like walking talking electronics stores.

It may sound like I am suggesting that this is a bad thing. Perhaps it seems that I am pointing out how distractive these electronic devices are as they keep students from focusing on academics. That is not what I am saying. I am really just pointing out the realities of the times in which we live. Kid's love of technology can actually be a very good thing if we use it to our advantage as we strive to educate them.

To use kid's love of technology to our advantage, we must fully embrace technology. We must understand and use current technology products to educate children. It is important to implement current hardware systems and have access to great electronic media content. Embracing, implementing, understanding, and using current technology is one of the most effective methods to capture the minds of children and help them achieve greatness.

Promotional Golf Umbrellas Are A Powerful Choice

Many a husband has often said that Dont you know - it never rains on a golf course! Despite this, golf umbrellas are one of the most favorite promotional items used by companies today.

Whether your customer is a golfer or not, they will always appreciate a good quality golf umbrella as a gift. The use of promotional umbrellas are not only limited to the golf course. Of course, the favorite golf umbrella will be permanently kept in the golf bags, but invariably one will find a number of other promotional golf umbrellas in the umbrella stand in the entrance hall of most homes. They are firm favorites as they are normally sturdy, large and look smart. Well-made golf umbrellas should last for years. golf umbrellas are generally larger than normal umbrellas, with strong frames made from either carbon steel or fiberglass, with a wooden handle. They can be relied on to withstand bad weather and protect you well from the rain. They are a firm favorite with people, even if they are not golfers.

On the golf course, you company logo is exposed to any number of influential decision makers, buyers, and the public in general. private golf courses are frequented by people who notice these things, and your company message will make its mark. Increasingly, those golf courses open to the general public are ideal venues to get your message across. Your product or brand will be exposed to larger numbers of both consumers and buyers, and your advertising will be hard at work. In particular, sponsored golf days are a wonderful way of getting your company or product out there in the public eye. Promotional umbrellas are very well displayed at these events.

And remember that your promotional golf umbrella wont only be seen on the golf course. Attend any school rugby or soccer match in winter, and youll see any number of golf umbrellas being used by parents. Parents watching water polo matches in the heat of the summer will be using your promotional golf umbrella to shade them from the sun. Of course, many are used as umbrellas for everyday use, to protect from winter rain and wind.

The design of the golf umbrellas is important there is a certain look that most of them tend to follow. The fabric panels are either all one color, or one often has two alternating colors, often white and one other color. The company logo will normally be printed on only one or two panels. Understated, but effective advertising. Your clients dont want to feel that they are a walking advertisement for your company. You are offering them an item that has a real use, and at the same time you are getting your company name and logo out there in the public eye. The use of promotional golf umbrellas is a tried and tested method of marketing, and remains ever-popular with both advertisers and those who receive them as gifts.

More Easy Volkswagen Upgrades - Brakes

part III

In the last two parts of this three part series, we covered a great deal of high quality, low cost, suspension upgrades. We also covered a performance intake by Euro Sport, which added a little pep to our step, and some aggressive sound. In part III of our series, we'll cover varying weighted short shift kits for the GTI and Jetta. We'll also have a look at steel braided hoses for your brakes and clutch. To start, let's take a look at short shift kits, and what they can do for you.

No matter the age of your GTI or Jetta, there's room for improvement in that box of rocks you use for shifting. (or so it feels) If you're in a MKI or MKII golf or Jetta, you'll want to have a look at the Euro Sport Short Shift Kit, as well as the Euro Sport Sure Shifters. A short shift kit will reduce throw by about 40%! 40%! You won't know how you lived without this after it's installed! Couple the short shift kit up with Euro Sport's Sure Shifter Kit and you'll get a much more solid feel in your throw. Prices range from about $85 to $125.

For those of you with the latest and greatest Volkswagen automobiles, y'all have to pay a little more. To get the same results, but, hopefully we're still in your price range. We'll try to keep it cheap. For MKIII's on up, Neuspeed has some fine quality engineering to offer. Neuspeed has a Short Shift Kit up to the latest MKV! Prices range from about $190 - $230, and each come pre-weighted. Installation isn't murder, but is a little time consuming. It is recommended you consult the Bentley manual prior to this install. It will help ensure you don't break anything as youre pulling apart interior.

The last performance upgrade to be covered in our three part series is steel braided hoses. Steel braided hoses provide more precision in braking and clutching. (those of you with a MKII & older have a clutch cable) When braking and clutching, hydraulics are used to activate the brake calipers and the clutch slave cylinder. Usually the stock lines are made of rubber braided hosing. Rubber is ok, and does the job well, but tends to expand a little when you depress the brake or the clutch. Replacing these hoses with steel braided hoses eliminates that expansion. Thus giving more precise braking and clutching. The price range on steel braided hoses runs from about $110 - $180. Two recommended purchases when changing out brake and clutch lines for steel braided hose:

  • Change your brake/clutch fluid to synthetic
  • Get Speed Bleeders
The reason behind these recommendations? Brake fluid is a consumable, and it's consumed when overheating of your brakes occur. Braking is by no means over rated, and the last thing you want to experience is a lack of it. Synthetic fluid is less susceptible to overheating, and thus likely to last longer. The boiling point of regular DOT 5.1 brake fluid is about 527 F. A synthetic brake fluid such as Motul RBF600, has a boiling point of about 593 F. The increase in boiling point slows consumption, and keeps the risk of brake fade at a distance. Bottles of Motul can be found all over, for roughly $12.00/bottle.

The Speed Bleeders recommendation comes from the stand point of convenience, and price. (est. $12.95/pair) If you have an '00 or older dub, these are a life saver when completing steel braided hose swap outs. Especially if you're doing this solo. It helps considerably to have a second person, but if one isn't available, you'll save yourself much headache with these little guys. Simply replace your existing bleeder, and manage your bleeding with a quarter turn of the Speed Bleeder. It doesn't appear as though Speed Bleeders produces their product for VW's past the year 2000 and above, yet. Installation is relatively easy, but more time consuming than anything. Consult the Bentley manual for details on replacing brake lines, the clutch slave line, and brake bleeding. Most cars have an order in which you're suppose to bleed each of the four calipers!

Hopefully this article has given you some ideas of additional modifications you can do to your car. Remember to always be safe and get someone that knows what they're doing to help you if you're unsure!

Timeshare Resorts

Timeshare resorts are a good option for people who want a luxurious vacation for a low price. Over the past decade, many major hotel chains have expanded into the timeshare market. In the mid 1980s, the renowned Marriott resort broke into the U.S. market, followed by Disney in 1991. Then came the really posh hotels like the Four Seasons resort and Ritz-Carlton chains, followed by exchange companies like Interval International and Resort Condominiums Inc.

Marriott is the most successful timeshare resort. Every other year, the timeshare owners of Marriott have the right to skip their visits to earn points that they can use at other Marriott hotels worldwide or swap with the timeshare owners of Interval International. Prices for a one-week ownership in this resort ranges from $9,000 to $51,900, depending on the resort and season with the annual fees ranging from $350 to $500.

The Walt Disney World timeshare resort is based mostly on the point system. Timeshare owners can use their vacation benefits in any of the five branches of the resort worldwide. If a family earns 230 points, they can stay for a week in the resort. Annual fees range from $475 to $600 for entry-level packages.

At the Four Seasons, a one-week stay in a 1,670-square-foot, two-bedroom villa costs $39,900 during the peak season in Scottsdale, plus an annual maintenance fee of $1,084.

The Hilton Grand Vacations Club operates 20 time-share resorts. Prices at these resorts start at $15,900 a week with an annual fee of about $600.

Many timeshare resorts are located in Egypt, which has a large services industry that is well equipped to handle the large number of tourists. The United States has the second largest number of timeshare resorts in the world.

Time Shares provides detailed information about timeshares, resale timeshares, selling timeshares, and more. Time Shares is affiliated with Alcatraz Tours Ferries and Tickets.

The Sensible Weight Loss Program

I have attempted many weight loss plans over the last few years and I must admit that I have had next to no success. Things have however now changed; I have managed to formulate a diet which is based on common sense. The problem that I found with the majority of the weight loss programs that I had tried was the fact that they were just too hard to apply. What I was being asked to do was basically just not realistic.

I decided, after having realised that these weight loss programs were not suitable for me, that I would attempt to find my own weight loss solution. My first idea was a little crazy. I was aware that I was over-weight due to the amount of food I ate and therefore tried to get away with eating virtually nothing. Do not try this method as I now realise that this was a stupid idea. I did try but I soon realised that I would not be able to keep it up, it just made me feel so ill.

The next idea was to have a diet that was far more sensible, a diet I would be able to stick to. I did have to cut down on the amount of food that I was eating but only by around twenty percent.

What I needed to do, in order to reduce the food and drink intake, was to stop eating things like crisps, chocolate and peanuts. I had a great plan; each and every Friday I would drink around ten pints of beer. This in itself was not good for my weight but the main problem was the fact that after drinking this amount of alcohol, I would then go for a curry with my friends. The next day I would feel hungover and to help with the recovery process, I would eat lots of fatty type foods. The plan was to basically stop drinking the beer on a Friday night. If I could do that for around three months then all should be fine, I am happy to report that it was.
