Pregnancy and Excercising - 6 Reasons to Excercise During Pregnancy

Everyone knows that exercise is good for your health. Exercising during pregnancy can have additional benefits. Generally, exercise should be light, especially during the first few weeks of pregnancy while your body adjusts to the changes. Heavy exercise can divert blood flow from crucial areas and most women that exercise regularly should tone down their workouts during pregnancy.

Walking, swimming, and yoga are two popular exercise activities suitable for pregnant women. Other forms of exercise like weight lifting are okay too as long as it is not too strenuous. Most experts recommend exercising 3-4 times a week, unless a medical condition prevents it. If in doubt, always consult a physician first. Listed below are some of the top reasons for exercising during pregnancy.

  1. Exercise can reduce the length of labor and reduce recovery times. The right exercise routines will increase stamina needed for delivery.
  2. Improve emotional health - exercise lowers stress and improves emotional health and can make it easier for the new mother to get through the experience of pregnancy.
  3. Exercise can help with weight management after the child is born. A common concern with most mothers is losing weight after pregnancy. Exercising during pregnancy can make postpartum weight loss easier.
  4. Exercise is good for your unborn baby. By keeping your body healthy, you are also helping out your baby.
  5. Reduced pregnancy side effects - Symptoms like headaches, fatigue, swelling, and constipation are common in pregnant women. Exercising has been shown to reduce the occurence of these symptoms.
  6. Decrease risk of premature birth - exercise has been shown in studies to decrease the risk of premature birth by about 50%.

Make sure to drink plenty of fluids before exercising, have a nutritious diet, and avoid over exertion. Also, listen to your body - if you start feeling sick or nauseous, then you should stop and rest.

5 Tips To Clean Your Concrete Driveway

The most commonly used part of your home, and also the most neglected part of your home, is your cement driveway. Most driveways are constructed of grey-tined concrete. This can really make a beautiful sight when it is brand new. But, over time, with the dirt, cracks, weeds growing, and oil build up; these can all be factors which will deter a potential buyer. Here are 5 tips for repairing and updating a concrete driveway.

  1. Do you have drainage problems? You will notice this problem after it rains. Instead of running off the side of the drive way, it will puddle in the middle. This is normally the result of concrete, which has settled into an insufficient foundation. The rule of thumb is for every foot of driveway, it should increase by of an inch from the road to the house or garage. This will facilitate the drainage away from the house.
  2. If you have oil stains, you can try this. While chalk can be easily removed with a good rain, or even the water hose, oil takes much more work. You can try to use a sprinkle of cat litter or saw dust. Let this sit for about 2 days, and then sweep it up. This will remove all of the top oils. But, for the deeper oils in the concrete, you need something else. Sprinkle a layer of dry concrete powder over the stain. Let this sit for 2 days. This will help absorb the oils deep in the concrete. Then sweep this up. Obviously, check the weather. If it rains on the concrete powder, you will have a permanent concrete patch.
  3. Power washing is a preferred method of getting a nice and even cleaning of your driveway. There are cleaners specific to driveways, sidewalks, or just concrete in general. Use these as they will do a much better job than just hot water and the pressure washer.
  4. Once the driveway is clean, and gives a nice uniform appearance, it is time to apply a sealer, or sealant. Remember, concrete is porous, which means it has little holes in it. Dirt and oils easily get down into these holes, and make the driveway look dirty again. The normal rains you get will not wash these out. The best way to keep these out is to seal the driveway. Sealants can be applied just like paint, and will give a nice glossy look. Some will even make the driveway appear as if it is still wet. A sealant can go a long way. You may need to apply it again once a year or two.
  5. If you are just bored in general with your driveway, then give it a facelift. There are plenty of decorative finished you can use for your driveway. The local hardware stores will have an entire section devoted to concrete finishes. See if any of these have the appeal and appearance you want.

These 5 tips can help you to clean and restore your concrete driveway, and then protect. Most people never pay any attention to this area, but it is the first part of any house you actually step foot on. Just follow the tips above, and you can bring your driveway back to its original appearance.

Dog Training - 7 Tips to Stop Chewing Today

All puppies chew. They need to chew on something to relieve the discomfort of teething. Well-behaved adult dogs will only chew on toys or bones, but some adult dogs will revert back to this puppy behavior when they are bored or stressed. Here are three things to do to break your dog from chewing your belongings:

1. Remove the temptation. Keep your shoes, clothes or anything else that you don't want your dog to chew off the floor. Anything on the ground is fair game as far as your puppy is concerned.

Be sure to tape all electrical, telephone and cable wiring to the wall to

keep your puppy from chewing it. You can also use pet repellent on the

wires to keep your dog away. This is a potentially deadly situation, and it

must be done to keep your pet safe.

2. Make it taste bad. One pet product, Bitter Apple, works, and so does hot pepper sauce - it just may be a little messy on your fine furniture. Any non-toxic substance that tastes bad to your dog is fair game.

3. The water treatment. Anytime you catch your puppy or dog chewing a cabinet door or your favorite pillow, say "No!" and spray him with a spray gun with a tablespoon or two of vinegar mixed in with the water. Give him a toy to chew.

4. Leave toys for your dog to play with. When you buy your pet a new toy, be sure to play with it with him the first time. Tease him with the toy, roll it on the floor, spin it around - whatever gets his attention. Don't have tons of toys for your dog - it confuses him if he has too much to keep track of and he may inadvertently play with something not his in the confusion - like your boots. Get him used to chewing on three toys, and then you can add more.

5. The tether technique. When you are home, clip your puppy's leash through your belt so he has to be in your sight. Every time he looks like he's going for something inappropriate to chew, give him a toy instead.

6. Confinement. If you are away during the day, confine your dog to either his crate or a room with his toys. Never let a dog with a chewing habit roam loose in your house all day.

7. Give frozen treats. Puppies in particular like frozen treats because the cold helps to relieve their teething discomfort. You can buy some particularly formulated for pets, or just freeze some peanut butter or some soup stock in ice cube trays.

Choosing The Right Countertop - Part 1

Countertops are a focal point in a kitchen or bathroom. You have many choices of material, each has advantages and disadvantages learn which is best for you!

Concrete

Concrete countertops are generally produced by casting them in custom made molds matching the size, shape, and cutouts of the customers requirements at the manufacturers premise. The concrete is then allowed to cure and is surface finished. Some manufacturers will actually cast the countertop at the customers premise, by building a mold on the base cabinets. This avoids the problems that are encountered in moving a large slab of concrete from the manufacturers facilities to the homeowners kitchen or bathroom. As all concrete countertops are custom molded each one is unique.

Concrete countertops allow for a great deal of customization in finish, texture, shape, edging, and color. As an example, a butcher block cutting board can be recessed into the countertop during molding. The variations are endless and are only constrained by your imagination.

Sinks can be installed as under-mount, surface mount or can be molded as an integral part of the counter top. A cutting board should be used as the concrete will dull knives instantly and it can scratch.

Maintenance: As concrete is a porous material it should be sealed yearly with a penetrating sealer and waxed every six months. Spills should be cleaned up immediately as some will produce stains if left to sit on the counter. Use a non-abrasive cleaner.

Cost: $75-$200/sq. ft., installed

Granite

Timeless beauty with unique natural stone that is what a granite countertop will provide! Granite countertops are cut to size, and polished at the manufacturers facility and then installed on your base cabinets. Available in a vast number of colors and grains it can be purchased to match any kitchen or bathroom dcor.

Sinks can be under-mount or surface mount, and a cutting board should be used to protect the surface as granite can scratch.

Maintenance. Granite is a very porous material and must be sealed with a penetrating sealer at least twice a year. A non-abrasive liquid detergent with warm water should be used for surface cleaning.

Cost: From $100-$200/lin. ft., installed

Laminate

Considered by many to be the poor mans countertop, laminate has recently developed a following by some top designers. The primary reason is the hundreds of colors, patterns and textures that are available, which can be used to enhance the dcor of any room.

Laminate countertops can be ordered preformed with integral back splashes and rolled front edges to prevent liquids from spilling down cabinets and onto floors. Almost any reasonably competent handyman or handywoman can create and install a laminate countertop on-site.

Laminate countertops do not lend themselves well to under-mount sink installation hence it is recommended that sinks be surface mounted. Laminate does scratch so a cutting board should be used. Laminate does not stand-up well to high heat, so some sort of protection should be placed under hot pots.

Maintenance: Use a non-abrasive cleaner and rinse to avoid leaving soap residue. Laminate does not require any sealing.

Cost: $25-$60/lin. ft., installed

Natural Stone

The most common of the natural stone countertops are marble, soapstone, and Jerusalem stone. Marble is considered the best surface for needing dough and serious bakers will always have a slab of marble in their preparation area. Although natural stones have an elegant, rich appearance, they do not make the best countertops from the standpoint of day-to-day usage. Natural stones stains easily, are soft and there is a tendency for the material to chip.

Sinks can be installed as under-mount or surface mount. A professional should make all cutouts and holes in the material.

Maintenance: Cleaning should be liquid detergent and warm water. Marble and Jerusalem stone should be sealed every year with a penetrating sealer. Soapstone should have mineral oil applied twice a month during the first year and four times a year thereafter.

Cost: From $75-$200/lin. ft., installed
